About

Afro Literary Magazine is a nonprofit organization that aims to embody the entirety of the afro — to be a beautiful, gravity-defying collection of art entwined through each coil, from root to tip. Afro strives to be a vessel that not only contains, but amplifies Black voices. All your afro-headed joy, struggle, love, and despair — Afro wants to comb it out (after moisturization of course) and wear it with pride.

In the writing community, Black writers are hard to come across, and if they are, their work and hardships are often tokenized and made to fit in special issues of activism and advocacy. And yes, these are kind and well-meaning gestures, but who’s best fit to write our stories and illustrate our lives rather than ourselves?

This is where Afro comes in. Think of us as your literary BSU. We want to do more than publish raised fists and tears, but also Black desires, delights, and daily lives. We welcome all kinds of Afros — Afro-Latino, Afro-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Asian — every Afro from every corner of the world, no matter how tight or loose the coil.
