FAQs

Does Afro only accept Black authors and artists?

Yes — this is in no way an effort to discriminate against other races. We simply want to create a space where Black voices can be heard without megaphones, and shared without the aid of non-black hands. Afro is a space to promote raw, unapologetic blackness. If this upsets you, we’re not sorry.

What if I’m [insert miniscule percentage]% Black? Can I still submit?

If you’re suddenly pulling out the ancestry.com results in order to increase your number of publications, Afro is not the right place for you.

Is Afro a teen magazine?

Afro is youth-made, but for mostly all ages. We encourage submissions from artists over 13, but we'll consider each submission the same, regardless of age.

Does Afro accept art?

Afro accepts all mediums of art - photography, digital art, paintings, sculptures - you name it! As long as it fits our theme, it’ll qualify for consideration. Check out our submit page for more information!

How long are response times?

Response times vary depending on the amount of submissions, but we should get back to you within six weeks. If you haven’t heard from us by then, feel free to send a query via email.

Does Afro pay its contributors?

No, but we hope to in the future!
